Why Fire Extinguishers Are So Important To Have In Your Home And Your Car by Aydan Corkern
Have you ever been in a situation where you wished you had a small fire extinguisher close? Most of the time when you think about one is when you really need one and do not have one. Did you know that in some cases your insurance company will lower your price on your policy if you put one of these in your home or even your vehicle. These small fire extinguishers do not take up a lot of space, but they will help by giving you a way to extinguish a small fire before it gets out of control and causes more severe damage.
If you have an extinguisher in your car, you will need to put them where you can get to them when you really need them. Make sure that you buy one that is appropriate to carry in your vehicle. A fire can can start under your hood and spread to the rest of your vehicle. If you have one of these in your grasp you might have a fighting chance. You have to be careful if you have an under the hood fire because when you open it, it could blaze up even higher. Make sure your extinguisher was designed to put out grease or oil fires because this will likely be what is burning under the hood. Never try to put out a burning gas tank, common sense should tell you that this is hazardous to your health and you should get out of range of an explosion as quickly as you can.
In your home, you should also have some smoke and fire detectors placed in every room of your house as a fire could start in any one of them. You will need to make sure that you do spot checks to make sure that any cords and electrical outlets in these rooms are still in good shape. When a house fire is detected quickly, this is when that extinguisher could come in handy to get the fire out before it gets out of control. Just remember, if a fire is spreading quickly and you are in danger of being caught in it, never try to put it out. This is when you should just get out and wait for help.
While you are waiting for the fire department to show there is not much you can do even though you might be tempted to go back in a save some things. This is never a good idea because fires are so unpredictable when they start raging. Something could explode or cave in and trap you inside. It is better to lose a home or a vehicle than to lose your life.
