Hydrospray Fire Extinguishers Are More Useful To Have Around Than Water by Jon Butt
Water has long been the most well known method for putting out fire. Widely used in hospitals, because of its non-contaminant nature, it is inexpensive and easy to clean up. Water extinguishes fire by taking away the heat element of the fire triangle.
Hydrospray fire extinguishers like other traditional water fire extinguishers are suitable for use on Class A fires, which are fires involving wood, paper, textiles or fabric. Hydrospray fire extinguishers are far more effective however, offering up to 300% more capability than other types of water fire extinguisher. Hydrospray or other water fire extinguishers should not be used on Class B fires (flammable liquids) because the water could spread the flammable liquid. Class C (electrical) fires should not be tackled with water due to the risk of electric shock.
As well as water, they contain additives which will help to suppress the fire, they coat surfaces being treated and change the consistency of the water enabling it to penetrate and cool the fire very effectively. Hydrospray fire extinguishers use a nozzle to dispense the liquid rather than a jet, which gives a more effective spread. Although they have not been designed to use on electrical fires, they have been specially designed to protect the user should they be using the extinguisher in close proximity to electrical equipment.
Developed in the late 90s, the 3 litre Hydrospray achieves the same results as a 9 litre water fire extinguisher. This makes it smaller and lighter, therefore much easier for most people to use. Only use a fire extinguisher if the emergency services have already been called, there is no risk of being overcome by smoke and fumes, and if there is an escape route accessible to you - if you are using a fire extinguisher it is best to keep the exit route at your back so it is easy for you to get out quickly. Fire extinguishers are only suitable in the very early stages of a fire in order to suppress it before the fire service arrives, if it is starting to spread, then it is time to get out of the building.
All fire extinguishers require regular inspections and maintenance including annual inspections and more detailed servicing every 5 years. Fire Extinguishers should be checked briefly every 30 days to ensure that they are in the right place, that they are visible and accessible and that the pressure is correct. Water extinguishers have to be recharged every year to remain effective.
