When Outdoor Fires Get Out Of Control by Aydan Corkern

Much of our time can be outside doing whatever chores that we might have to get done. There is always washing the car, raking leaves, mowing the lawn, or making minor homes repairs. Yard work can be very time consuming. Some people love it and some people hate it. Then there are times we spend outdoors just enjoying ourselves cooking out, swimming if we have a pool, or just playing with the kids or our pets.

Usually there is not much danger associated with outdoor work unless you might be climbing a tall ladder to get on the roof or prune dead branches from a large tree. You have to use care when doing these kinds of outdoor chores.

Having a fire outside of the home can also be something that can be very dangerous if you are not paying attention to what you are doing. Even if you are paying attention, accidents can still happen. Two of the biggest reasons that you might build a fire outside is to cook out or burn brush. We usually do these things without giving them much thought, but we probably should.

When we cook out, we could use a gas grill or charcoal. Either one can pose a threat to the house and surrounding grounds if they were to get out of control. An gas grill that is defective could explode and cause a huge fire, so it is important that you always inspect your grill each time you use it just to be on the safe side. Make sure you know how to operate it correctly before you ever start to use it.

Brush fires are usually started because they are not watched closely enough, the wind is too strong, or it burns too quickly and someone can lose control of it that way. Anytime you chooses to burn brush or dead branches or leaves, make sure the wind is calm. Keep a water hose or fire extinguisher close by to put out the flames quickly before they have a chance to spread elsewhere.

If you do ever have an outside fire that gets out of control and you are not able to get it put out, call your fire department immediately. Do not wait until it gets so big that it threatens your home or that of your neighbors. If the ground is very dry, it usually does not take but seconds for a small flame to burst into a huge fire that could end up killing someone.
