Ideal Fire Extinguishers For Use In Your Home by Jon Butt
I realise that it may sound a little bit extravagant, but I actually have three fire extinguishers located throughout my home. This is so that I have the necessary fire protection available on each floor of my house. Including my extended loft access. One of the main reasons that spurred me into getting this level of protection, was when my daughter caused a fire actually within her own bedroom.
At the time, my daughter was fourteen and she had just split up with her first boyfriend, whom she had been with for a whole eight months. She decided to burn some of the love letters that he had sent to her, during their time together, and ended up setting a few other things alight at the same time. She burnt the letters and threw them into a bin. This led to a fire becoming out of control for her and ended up setting her bedroom curtains alight at the same time.
At that time, I thank God that she had enough common sense to get me. I had to throw three separate buckets of water onto the fire to completely put out all of the flames. Luckily, although there was not too much damage, I was still shaken up by the whole incident and I was very concerned by the amount of time that it took me to extinguish the fire.
Something had to be done and my family and home would have to be more protected and prepared for any potential risk in the future.
I managed to find out that foam fire extinguishers are ideal for tackling fires similar to that which my family experienced. They would work on things like paper, wood, textiles and are recommended for general home use. So I have two foam fire extinguishers installed in the house. One on the first floor landing and the other in the loft extension.
On the ground floor, I decided to opt for a wet chemical fire extinguisher as this is recommended for use even on chip pan fires. My thinking was that having two types of fire extinguishers within the house, would increase the level of protection and the types of fires that may need to be dealt with.
